Deep groove ball bearings are the type of roller bearing most often used in terms of quantity. Quite often, the term ball bearings is used for these. The balls are guided through respectively shaped grooves in the inner and outer race. The relatively small contact zones between the ball and the raceway (spot contact) minimises the possible friction surface and thus rolling resistance. The contact takes place between the ball and the inner or outer race. To prevent the balls touching each other, they are kept apart by a cage. This means that relatively low-friction loads are transmitted between parts of a machine which move in relation to one another. Modern ball bearings are assembled according to the Conrad method.
