Linear technology comprises solutions concerning bearings for linear movements. For this purpose, the roller bearing principle for rotating movements is applied to linear movements.

Once again, balls, cylindrical rollers or needles are used as rolling elements. The advantages of the rolling bearing when compared with slide bearings include less friction, reduced loss of energy and bearing clearance. Linear systems are easy to maintain and grease and they do not require a run-in period. In contrast to slide bearings, linear rolling bearings are more susceptible to shocks and they are noisier. Furthermore, the international standardisation ensures exchangeability and thus complete flexibility during maintenance.
